The Nederlands Kamerkoor marks the 350th anniversary of the birth of Alessandro Scarlatti with the world premiere recording of Vespro della beata Vergine. This work by Scarlatti brings together a series of pieces that are now scattered in various libraries in Europe. An exact dating of each of the pieces is very difficult to perform. It is the use of a cantus firmus that is common to all these works for five voices, making these pieces a homogeneous whole that seems circumscribed in time. That they could once have belonged to a complete cycle of evening psalms is a hypothesis that must unfortunately remain in the realm of speculation.
