His decades-long career makes Misha Elman (1881 – 1967) probably the most important representative of the great St. Petersburg Conservatory. As early as 1913 he accompanied Enrico Caruso – which can be heard as a bonus track on this 10-CD set.
After sensational success in Berlin in 1904 his world career started, and one year later Elman played at Buckingham Palace in front of King Edward VII. The British press called him “the greatest violinist in the world”. He made his debut at the New York Carnegie Hall in 1908 with Tchaikovsky’s Concerto op. 35, which can also be heard in this collection, both live from Los Angeles and as a studio production from the London Kingsway Hall.
In this collection you will also hear one of the most expensive Stradivari, that of Joseph Joachim, friend of Brahms, and the violin Mischa played until his last days
