Lee Konitz is generally accepted as one of the very few alto saxophonists not to follow the stylistic lead of Charlie Parker in the Forties. Bird’s innovative breakthrough held little attraction for a musician who has now pursued his own goals in eight separate decades, winning the respect of musicians young and old along the way. His position in music as one of the finest exponents of ‘cool jazz’ is an accepted fact and, despite a natural curiosity that has often found him performing in more avant-garde circles, he has always adhered to the basic principles surrounding the cool movement.
