„Rhythm and blues used to be called race music”, said Ray Charles. “This music
was going on for years, but nobody paid any attention to it.“ Hidden in plain sight,
banned on radio stations due to racial segregation, but still available on records and
played in bars, clubs and juke joints throughout the “chitlin’ circuit”, the music thrived
throughout the African-American communities from the early 1920s until the end of
the 1940s. Due to changing attitudes towards racism, which may or may not have
had something to with the enthusiastic way African-American music from Jazz to
Blues was welcomed in Europe after WWII, white audiences in the US caught on to
black music and race records were rebranded as “rhythm and blues.” This 10 CD
box presents 20 original albums of nine of the greatest stars of Rhythm & Blues from
1956 to 1962. Queens of the genre like Ruth Brown and Laverne Baker, as well as
Kings like Ray Charles, Ben E. King, Sam Cooke, Solomon Burke, Clyde McPhatter,
Lloyd Price and Joe Turner give you no less than 110 chart topping songs, from
“What´d I Say” via “You Send Me” to “Spanish Harlem” or “(What a) Wonderful
World” and “Stand by Me”. A treasure trove of the music they called Rhythm &
Blues.
