AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD second set release from Kenny Dorham, complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details
“Afro-Cuban”; “’Round About Midnight At The Café Bohemia”; “Jazz Contrasts” and “Whistle Stop’”
From an early start playing piano at age seven, Kenny Dorham moved on to trumpet and played with the likes of Wild Bill Davis, Russell Jacquet (brother of Illinois), Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Eckstine and Lionel Hampton. Finally in 1948 he joined up with Charlie Parker in a small group setting where his soloing finally gained the attention he had for so long deserved. We at AVID like Kenny’s style so much we decided he should get a Second Set, and here it is, besides, due to space limitations, we omitted some classic albums from the great trumpeter’s first set! Across our four fine selections Kenny is joined by the absolute cream of jazz players of the day, many of whom you will find with their own albums in our extensive catalogue. The names literally read like a who’s who of jazz greats including Hank Mobley, Cecil Payne, Horace Silver, Oscar Pettiford, Art Blakey, Kenny Burrell, J.R. Monterose, Hank Jones, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones.
