Dave Brubeck left a legacy of material that outlives the time and place it first came into being. He was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 alongside Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, but this and many honorary degrees were eclipsed when an asteroid, 5079 Brubeck, was named after him – entirely appropriate for a man The Los Angeles times noted was ‘one of jazz’s first pop stars.’
