AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic album series with a re-mastered 2CD release by Billy Taylor, complete with original artwork and liner notes.
“Cross Section”; “Billy Taylor with Candido”; “The Billy Taylor Touch” and “With Four Flutes”
Born into a musical family, young Billy Taylor began learning musical instruments as a child including piano, guitar, drums and saxophone. However it was the piano he excelled at and after obtaining his music degree in 1942 he went on to gain international success as a jazz pianist and composer. By 1944 Billy had joined the Ben Webster Quartet and was playing at New York’s 52nd Street when he met the legendary pianist Art Tatum who would go on to become his mentor. Other great jazz names Billy was to play with include Billie Holiday, Don Redman, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz and both Dizzy and Miles! Primarily known for his jazz Trio work, Billy was also a great champion of Latin music playing with the likes of Machito and Candido, as you will hear on some of our selections.
