Our programming for this, the final double CD in the series, is somewhat different from our earlier releases. The first CD presents two complete Masses, the Missa Peccata mea by Lupus Hellinck and the Missa Nisi Dominus by Pierre de Manchicourt; these are complemented by a number of short liturgical works. The second CD demonstrates how a polyphonic Mass would have sounded in the context of a celebration of the Mass in the 16th century.
The choirbooks of the Pieterskerk contain several polyphonic works that were intended specifically for the feast of Corpus Christi. Two of these can be heard on earlier CDs from this series: the five-part motet Ego sum panis vite by Christian Hollander (CD set 1) and the anonymous four-part hymn Pange lingua (CD set 2).
A word of special thanks is also due to Peter de Groot, the artistic director of the Egidius Quartet, for it is primarily thanks to his efforts that this enormous project was first launched and then completed in a time when the recording and release of early music on CD was becoming more and more difficult. I was able to discuss programming and performance with Peter extensively and in complete harmony; there was only one occasion on which we realised that we were not in complete accord. Looking back over the project as a whole, we can proudly present this set of six double CDs as an impressive act of homage to a remarkable body of work, one of the great treasures of the Netherlands’ musical history.
