Richard Strauss was not only a world famous concert conductor and one of the leading opera composers of his day, but also the creator of masterly tone poems and trend-setting orchestra-accompanied lieder. This 10-CD set celebrates his musical legacy and includes all the major orchestral works including the Alpine Symphony, Till Eulenspiegel, Don Quixote, Ein Heldenleben, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Don Juan, and Tod und Verklrung, alongside the Violin Sonata, opus 18 and the Horn Concerto No 2. The conductors featured in the set include Karl Bohm, Herbert von Karajan, Erich Kleiber, George Szell, Sir Georg Solti and Fritz Reiner. Several of the recordings presented in the collection are considered to be among the best ever made, including the legendary complete recording of ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ made by Herbert von Karajan in 1956. Amongst the singers and instrumentalists featured are Friedrich Gulda, Dennis Brain, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Nicolai Gedda, Christa Ludwig, and Gerald Moore.
