As a singer, dancer and actor Sammy Davis Jr. (1925 1990), a.k.a. “Mr. Show Business”, was one of the most charismatic American artists. The child of two dancers, he was born in Harlem, New York, and raised by his father from the age of three, after the couple separated. He made his first appearances as a tap-dance prodigy at the vaudeville shows, at which Sammy Davis Sr. worked. The father-son-duo went on tours across the US with the Will Mastin Trio, interrupted only by Junior’s military service. Sammy Davis Jr. met Frank Sinatra in 1941, and the pair enjoyed a lifelong friendship and professional partnership as singers, actors and entertainers. When Dean Martin and a few others joined them in the ’50s, they renamed themselves The Rat Pack and appeared together in movies like “Ocean’s Eleven”, in Las Vegas, and on stages all over the world.
When his debut album “Starring Sammy Davis Jr.” was released in 1954 he had already mastered the ups and downs of the life of an entertainer, and was a “young veteran” as an interpreter of jazz and pop songs. Surrounded by the best arrangers and orchestras, he went on to present one successful record after the other, as one can hear on this collection. Highlights were his duets with the jazz singer Carmen McRae and the first album with the Count Basie Orchestra. As an all-round talent and impersonator, he shines most beautifully on his live performances, such as “At Town Hall”, which still sounds so fresh and wonderful one feels like booking tickets on the spot.
